"Calm down, Jamie Cullum fans: "These Are the Days" isn’t the anthem you know so well. Still, like the rest of this accomplished singer-songwriter set, it has the kind of melodic lilt that ought to appeal to Cullum’s followers. Formerly a pianist with the likes of Jimmy Scott, Regen comes into his own on original material, accompanied by Elvis Costello regulars — the bassist Davey Faragher and the drummer Pete Thomas. The oft-noted Randy Newman influence shines through on some ballads, but Regen’s playing and writing have muscle and character of their own."
